PETER C. STONE'S BIOGRAPHY

Peter C. Stone on location.
Peter C. Stone on location.

Throughout his career, Peter C. Stone has found inspiration from the hidden bogs and swamplands of southern New England to more remote landscapes. He has worked in Australia, Indonesia, and India, the rugged shores of Labrador and Baffin Island, the Antarctic, the mythic tableaux of North Wales, and Nepal’s Himalayas. While developing a unique style of Tonal Realism, this accomplished artist and author has developed his own methods for painting en plein air.

Mr. Stone’s Tonalism incorporates the aesthetic of plein airisme with a sophisticated glazing technique.

The artist’s work focuses on the values of stewardship and our spiritual relationship with the lands that sustain us. He invites us to consider that the symbols in our surroundings are archetypal, no matter what our climate or the boundaries of our cultures. His paintings remind us that awareness of our connection with the land begins before we are born. The first opportunities for exploring this spiritual bond arise when we are children and are sustainable through our local customs and beliefs. In turn, a protected cultural heritage fosters stewardship and conservation.

Peter C. Stone received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978 from the Claremont Colleges. Since 1983 he has presented more than thirty solo shows at galleries and museums in the United States and his work has been represented in numerous group exhibitions, including Art Expo New York, the Royal Academy of Art, London, and the DeCordova Museum. His professional affiliations include the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and the Copley Society of Boston. He has served as a juror and advisor to the Art by Kids program of Young At Arts, the educational initiative of the Wang Center for the Performing Arts in Boston.

Peter C. Stone’s latest illustrated literary work, Sanctuaries (TWC publishers, 2003), is a testament to the heritable landscapes of southern New England. Recent projects include Condor Magic (with Lyn Hoopes, Benefactory, 1997), which was selected for the national literacy program “America Reads”. The artist also presented a solo museum exhibition in 1999, for which he served as guest curator at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Part of a current literary project, The Possibilities of Light in a Cold Place, the exhibition began traveling to other galleries and museums in 2001.

Peter C. Stone’s contemporary Tonalist landscape paintings are luminous spiritual journeys that celebrate nature and Native lands. Publisher Weekly described Mr. stone’s paintings as “…sumptuous and beyond the tactile into a nearly mystical realm.”   The artist’s oil paintings explore subjects ranging from Rivers around Boston, Massachusetts and New England to Condors in the Southwest and Seascapes in the Antarctic.
