FEATURING
ANITA WINSTANLEY ROARK ARTIST
RECEPTION OCTOBER 8, 2005, 4 TO 7 PM
Anita
Winstanley Roark’s photographs are explorations of light and
form. Using a 35 mm
camera and a standard 50mm lens she does not alter her images in
any way. Instead,
she prefers to use natural light to paint photographic images
that explore our relationship with nature.
With rich colors and bold compositions she creates
landscapes that are visual poetry.
Her figurative works focus on using light to contrast
the textures and repetitive shapes found in nature and her
models. These
moving figurative statements create a sense of power while
displaying glowing skin colors that create a highly sensuous
mood. Her fine art photographs are intermingled with sharply focused yet sweeping images of landscapes and nudes that display a classical feel. |

Artcyclopedia states “Realism is an approach to art in which subjects
are portrayed in as straightforward a manner as possible, without
idealizing them and without following the rules of formal theory.”
Today’s realists see realism as a way to express the world around them.
They invite the viewer to share this captured beauty and
challenge him or her to expand their vision of this ever-changing world.
Through different approaches, Shawn
Lütz, Robert K. Roark, and Timothy C. Tyler are three recognized leading masters whose
artistic visions embody Contemporary Realism.
As a self taught artist, Mr. Lütz has acquired, in a relatively short
time, a technical understanding of his medium that is almost difficult
to grasp and has developed a unique style of HyperRealism. His attention to detail, composition and dramatic
lighting captures the romance and drama of any scene.
While his use of color and themes elicit references to Maxfield
Parrish, Mr. Lütz's exquisite jewel-like oils exhibit a solidarity of
style and a magic all their own.
Mr. Tyler’s paintings explore
mythological subjects. Through these archetypes and symbols he aspires
to depict human themes and emotions. These works are carefully set up
and painted directly from life - the same method he uses for his still
lifes and portrait art. With
rich colors and painterly brush strokes Mr. Tyler painting embodies
Classical Realism.
A
modern day master of Contemporary Realism, Mr. Roark's paintings have
been described as "a mastery of reflected light." His
landscapes and still lifes "invite tactile exploration" and
his interior scenes have elicited references to Vermeer, "while
still modern and completely Mr. Roark's own, in style and subject."
Describing his work, Mr. Roark has said that he paints in "a simple
and straightforward manner, choosing to define the landscape and other
subjects in terms of light as opposed to color." His approach
transports the viewer into a beautiful world of varied subjects and
entices one to linger and explore radiant textures and evocative light.

Trompe l’oeil (French for “fool the eye”) is a
meticulous style of painting that recreates objects so precisely that viewers
swear they’re real. But because
of the exacting process required for the artists to paint canvases in this
style, there are only about 15 to 20 artists in America practicing this art form
as full-time professionals.
Over a year ago, the Winstanley-Roark gallery in Dennis,
Massachusetts, invited three museum-quality trompe l’oeil artists to create an
art exhibition devoted to flora and fauna.
With over thirty paintings in the gallery show, it represents the largest
array of such paintings ever brought together in one place.
The artists, Debra Teare of Utah,
Michael Riddet of
Wisconsin, and Larry Charles of Arizona, are also participants in a traveling
museum exhibition that is being shown in 12 museums across the country from
February 2005 through July 2007.
“We’re thrilled to get these three trompe l’oeil
masters for the art show,” said gallery director Anita Winstanley Roark. “No
one has ever tried this type of trompe l’oeil exhibition before. It will be quite a coup for the art lovers in Cape Cod to see
the paintings first.”
According to Larry Charles, the co-founder of the Trompe
l’Oeil Society of Artists, “It takes at least a month to do just one trompe
l’oeil oil painting because of all the optical details and illusions required
for this style of painting. But the
rewards are worth it: We call it
the ‘wow factor’ when viewers walk through one of our gallery or museum
shows.”

CONTEMPORARY VIEWS OF LILY PONDS
GEORGE MARKS, JR. & PETER C. STONE
You Are Invited To A Gala Artists’ Reception
July 16, 2005, 5 to 8 PM
Show will continue through July 23, 2005

George Marks, Jr. and Peter
C. Stone paint landscapes that are dramatic, filled with light and
speak of their obvious love of nature. These two artists have discovered
in their lily pond paintings a magical and spiritual side of nature which they
share with us. They show us a new
way of seeing these tranquil scenes that allows us to transform and energize our
ideas about this subject.
George Marks, Jr. is a truly creative impressionist who paints in a
singularly expressive manner. His unique style incorporates a palette which
combines earth tones and subtle colors with bold brush strokes to convey a sense
of powerful and harmonious draftsmanship and luminosity. Mr. Marks, Jr.
states, “the love I have for these quiet little corners of nature has always
inspired me to put on canvas and pass on to others visually a personal feeling
for them I could never put into
words."
Peter C. Stone has developed his own methods for
painting plein air, a Pulled Pointillism. This
is a unique style of Tonal Realism that incorporates the aesthetic of plein air
with a sophisticated glazing technique. His palette is filled with vibrant colors that are clean and
fresh while his painterly method incorporates bold, confident strokes that are
sculpted to capture the spontaneous, spiritual aspect he finds in nature. Mr.
Stone states, “even the simplest image of a
water lily represents some aspect of mystery. It leads us within as it
floats alongside the sun, moon, or stars, giving new meaning to our relationship
with the heavens and that mysterious aspect of our inner selves.”

THE ART OF PLEIN AIR
DEANE FOLSOM, SR. & HAL DeWALTOFF
You Are Invited To A Gala Artists’ Reception
July 2, 2005, 5 to 8 PM
Show will continue through July 9, 2005

The term Plein Air is French and means to
paint in “open air” so that the artist can experience the effects of natural
sunlight on their subject matter. Dean Folsom, Sr. and Hal
DeWaltoff are both Cape Cod masters of the art of plein air who use this
method of painting to capture fleeting images in nature. With assured, bold and
loose brush strokes, vivid colors and impressionistic flair these two artists
display a love of their subjects. As painters of their natural world they are
both able to communicate the beauty and vitality of their environment. Mr.
Folsom, Sr. and Mr. DeWaltoff invite the view to experience the spontaneity of
their medium and brushstrokes while sharing the essence of light, color and
beauty of our natural world.

ART GLASS & SCULPTURE
YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO ATTEND
A GALA ARTISTS’ RECEPTION SATURDAY, May
28, 2005, 4 to 7 PM
Show will continue through June 4, 2005

With a degree in art history and a lauded
paper restorer, Susan Cicconi has embarked on a new artistic endeavor to
capture the spirit of fresh flowers (pressed and dried) in all of their delicate
beauty. By enveloping them in multi-colored, hand-made Thai and Japanese rice
papers and then applying them to hand-blown, antique and contemporary glassware
she creates exquisite works of decoupaged art glass.
Joy Motisi has long enjoyed a fascination with
the beauty of glass and its relationship with light and the spectrum of color.
She explored and studied the techniques of the “Tiffany” method of stained
glass construction, a foil method of stained glass. With innovative designs Ms.
Motisi now creates intricate pieces with sinuous lines whose principal subject
is nature, whether stylized or realistic.
Winner of many prestigious awards, Robert
Birbeck creates riveting goddesses in red pumps through a unique marriage of his
medium to the female form. Mr. Birbeck’s full-figured women are sculpted with
a delicacy of line and lyrical fluency that displays a sensuality and
playfulness capturing the human essences of his subjects. Inspired by primitive
African and pre-Columbian sculpture, as well as Modigliani’s and Brancussi’s
sculpture, Birbeck creates women with individual personalities whose substantial
bodies display the fleshy amplitudes of Rubens while recalling a more generous,
baroque sense of beauty.
Richard Kaish creates fluid, moving figures in
bronze. His 30 years of experience in welding has given him an intimate
knowledge of the bronze medium. He describes his experience with bronze as “a
rich vocabulary of techniques” which allows him to create these whimsical yet
captivating figures. Welded directly in metal, his one of a kind pieces are
created with no molds and display his love of the human form and an expert
knowledge of his medium.
