CEES PENNING

Cees Penning
Cees Penning

Born in Rotterdam, Holland, Cees Penning is a self-taught photo-realist painter with deft skills honed over a career that has spanned almost five decades and three countries.

Cees (pronounced “Case ”) began drawing and painting when he was in kindergarten.  Initially, his paintings were watercolors.  But, always fascinated by realism, he was first attracted to a career in graphic design.  He graduated from the Graphic Academy in Amsterdam in the 1960s, and worked as a photo-retoucher in Holland and Germany until 1974 when he moved to New York.

Once in the United States, he established a successful enterprise in the very precise and demanding field of color transparency retouching.  But twenty years later in the 1990s, digital media began to overwhelm his industry.

Mr. Penning decided to leave that business and take up oil painting. He has been creating portraits, nudes, exotic animals, floral and still-lifes in the photo-realistic style for almost  nine years.

A distinctive hallmark of his personal style is his ability to understand and execute a high degree of contrast between light and dark – a rare skill refined through decades of intense retouching work then translated into the superb works in oil he creates today.

Mr. Penning is a member of the International Guild of Realism.  Recently he won the Still-Life category for his painting titled “The Warrior” at the Fourth International ARC Salon™ Competition, Art Renewal Center and the “Pioneer in Realism” award at the 2008 International Guild of Realism Juried Exhibition in Scottsdale, AZ.
