J oy Motisi has long enjoyed a fascination with the
beauty of glass - its relationship with light and the spectrum of
color. Her journey to artistic perfection began in 1981 with private
tutelage in the studio of Master Craftsman, Angelo Zucano of Nyack, New
York. She explored and studied the techniques of the “Tiffany”
method of stained glass construction, a foil method of stain glass
invented by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1893. Like Tiffany, but uniquely
her own in design, Ms. Motisi now creates intricately designed pieces
which would be almost impossible to achieve in the older leaded process.
In 1986 Ms. Motisi launched her professional career
with numerous commissioned pieces, including one to commemorate the 125th
Anniversary of the Nyack Fire Department, Nyack, New York. With the
growth of her skills and reputation, Ms. Motisi accepted a teaching position for the Adult Education
|
Division of the Town of Clarkstown, New
City, New York in 1989. She enjoyed sharing the love of the fine art of
stained glass with beginning artists and the opportunity to expand
creatively.
Ms. Motisi moved with her husband from New York to Cape Cod in 1994.
She is constantly inspired by the natural beauty of Cape Cod and is now
devoting all of her energy to creating works of art in the
medium of glass. Ms. Motisi has become renowned for her exceptional
designs, many of which incorporate sculpture or extraordinary objects
into her creations. Since coming to the Cape she has had numerous
exhibitions of her work with her last exhibition being a sell out show
at the Museum of Natural History, Brewster, MA in 1999.
About the Process
Work begins in the design stage and a pattern is
created. Glass is meticulously chosen for its individual personality and
ability to enhance the design. The glass is then cut and ground to
accommodate the pattern. The process continues with copper foiling,
fluxing, and bead soldering. Patinas are applied and the finished piece
is polished.
Ms. Motisi is available for private commissions to suit your needs.
